If you authorized a merchant to charge your account for a recurring payment and would like to stop automatic payments, you can request a stop payment for future transactions. Stop payments only block future transactions, not those that are already pending.
You can stop recurring payments made directly from your bank account, debit card, or Credit Builder card, including:
- Recurring transactions- Ongoing charges without an agreed-upon end date
- Installment transactions- Continuous payments set for a specific time period
- Other card-on-file transactions - Payments initiated by cardholders
You can also stop payments to prevent fraud and unauthorized use of your cards.
To request a stop payment, contact us as soon as possible before your next recurring payment is scheduled so we can attempt to stop it.
What if the stop payment isn’t effective?
A stop payment does not guarantee that all future transactions will be stopped. Several factors affect a stop payment’s effectiveness, including whether it was applied to an eligible recurring transaction, how soon the stop was requested before the transaction was authorized, and even the card network that the merchant uses.
The best way to guarantee that is to contact the merchant so they can remove your authorization from the system.
How long do stop payments last?
For ACH transactions, you can set the stop payment duration or make it permanent.
For card transactions, a stop payment lasts for 60 months or until you ask us to remove it.
If you wish to cancel or update the duration of your stop payment, contact us.
