How do I file my taxes through Chime?

To file your taxes through the app:
  1. From the Chime home screen:
    • Look for the banner File your taxes for free, then tap Get Started, or
    • Tap Taxes under the Discover more header
  2. Follow the instructions to complete the tax return.
Note: During tax season, members can also monitor the status of their return from the Taxes card under the banners on the home screen.

Benefits of filing your taxes through Chime:

  • File early and save your progress. You may be able to file your federal taxes early starting January 7. Early on, you can begin your return and save your progress, then return to submit once the IRS opens.

  • Early submissions. As we get closer to the IRS opening, some members will be able to submit early. If you submit during this time, our tax partner, April, will hold your return and automatically send it to the IRS when filing opens. April will send you reminder emails if you need to return later to finish submitting.

  • Track your return in the Chime App. You can follow your return status from "In Progress" to "E-Filed" and then "Accepted" once the IRS processes it.

  • Support for itemized deductions. Our tax filing partner, April, supports itemized deductions. If you need help, you can chat directly with April for questions about your return or itemized deductions.

  • Get your refund faster with direct deposit. You may get your federal tax refund up to five (5)  days early when you use direct deposit with Chime.

    • Reminder: Chime does not guarantee timing of refund. Five day refund estimate is based on 2024 tax year filing data. Refund timing estimates are dependent upon timing of complete tax return submission and when the IRS submits your refund.

Filing details and limitations

  • Primary filer requirement: To make sure your refund goes through without delays, you must be listed as the primary filer if you want the deposit sent to your Chime account. This helps prevent name mismatches that can cause issues.

  • Supported filing statuses: You can file as single, married filing jointly, married filing separately, head of household, or qualifying surviving spouse. Make sure you are listed as the primary filer.

  • Prior-year tax return upload: For faster filing, you may be prompted to upload your prior year’s tax return. Remember to upload your Form 1040, which is different from your W2. If you didn’t file taxes last year, your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) will be zero.

  • Not currently supported: We don’t support filings that include income from more than one state or income from overseas.
