How do I file my taxes through Chime?

Navigate to the Tax Hub on the app's homepage and follow the step-by-step instructions under File your taxes for free.

Key Features of filing taxes through Chime:

    • File early in the app starting January 9 (if eligible). If you file before the IRS officially opens, our tax filing partners will hold your submission and send it to the IRS when they open and start accepting filings.
    • Monitor your return status in-app, from "In Progress" to "E-Filed," and then "Accepted" after IRS review. After your return is Accepted, IRS refund processing times may vary.
    • Access direct support from our tax filing partners for filing statuses and itemized deductions.
    • You can get your federal tax refund up to six days early with direct deposit to your Chime account. Chime does not guarantee the timing of refund. The six-day refund estimate is based on 2023 tax year filing date. Refund timing estimates are dependent upon the timing of complete tax return submission and when the IRS submits your refund.

For faster filing, you may be prompted to upload your prior year’s tax return. Remember to upload your Form 1040, which is different from your W2.

Need a copy? Visit irs.gov and tap Get your tax record.

If you filed through Chime last year, you can view your previous tax return in-app under "Tax Documents" in the tax hub or Profile. You can also check the "Documents" or "Returns" section of our tax filing partner’s navigation to find it.

Why can’t I file my state return yet?

State tax filing availability depends on both your state and the tax filing partner. While you wait, you can go ahead and file your federal return. You'll get an email from our tax partner as soon as your state return is ready to file. Keep in mind that different states open at different times, and availability can also vary between tax filing services. That means a friend using another provider may be able to file before or after you. States that require residents to file a state income tax return will eventually be available for filing through our tax partners.
