What is Chime’s Virtual Card?

A virtual card is a digital form of payment that works similarly to a physical card. It has its own unique number, distinct from your physical Chime card. While both cards link to the same account, the virtual card lets you securely shop online, set up subscriptions, and make in-store purchases by adding it to your mobile wallet, all without needing your physical card.

Chime offers virtual cards as a safe and convenient way to make purchases without using your physical card. Some key benefits include:

  • Digital and Safe: A virtual card is stored in the Chime app or you can add it to your mobile wallet so you don't need to carry it around.
  • Linked to Your Account: Just like your physical card, your virtual card is connected to your Chime account. When you use it, the money comes from the same place.
  • Convenient: You can use it right away without waiting for your physical card to arrive in the mail.

To access your virtual card in the Chime app, go to Profile and tap Cards. Here, you can replace your virtual card number and freeze or unfreeze your virtual card, which enables or disables transactions. Learn more about it in Where can I find and manage my cards in the Chime App?

It's important to remember that you can't use your virtual card to withdraw cash at ATMs or to receive cashback from retailers. You'll need to use your physical card for those actions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why don’t I see my virtual card in the Chime app?

If you’ve had a temporary card with Chime before, you may need to update to the latest version of the Chime app.

How do I set a PIN for my virtual card?

You don’t need to set a PIN for the virtual card because you can’t use it to access ATMs at this time.

Why don’t the card numbers in-app match what’s on the physical card I received?

The virtual card has its own unique card number, different from the physical card.

Can I add money to my account using my virtual card?

You’ll need to wait until your physical card arrives to withdraw or deposit cash using our network of ATMs. In the meantime, you can move money into and out of your account via Bank Transfer.

What happened to the temporary card?

We no longer offer temporary cards. All virtual cards are now permanent to ensure you have uninterrupted access to your money at all times.
