What is investing?
Investing is putting money into financial products, such as funds that hold stocks and bonds, with the potential to grow your money over time. Investing involves risk, and the value of your investments can go up or down based on market conditions. This means there is potential for gains, but also a risk of losing money.
What is Automated Investing?
The product allows Chime members to open an automated, fully managed investing account directly within the Chime app, where they can deposit funds that are automatically invested in pre-built diversified Exchange-traded funds (ETF) portfolios aligned with the member’s risk profile.
Automated Investing on Chime’s app is offered through its partner, Atomic Invest LLC, an SEC-registered investment adviser that provides investment management services. Chime is not a registered investment adviser and does not provide investment advice or make decisions about your portfolio. Chime’s role is to only support your app experience.
How Automated Investing works in the Chime app
When you open an Automated Investing account, you’ll answer a few questions about your goals and comfort with risk. Based on your responses, you’ll be matched with one of multiple investment portfolios — such as conservative, balanced, or aggressive. You can choose the recommended portfolio or select a different option. The portfolio you choose determines how your money will be invested. Once opened, your Automated Investing account is ready to receive deposits from your Chime account.
After your account is opened, all Automated Investing activity happens directly in the Investing section of the app:
- You can deposit money from your Chime Checking or Chime Card account into your Automated Investing account.
- When you make a deposit, the money is typically invested the same day if it’s submitted during market hours and before 3 PM ET. Deposits made after 3 PM ET, on weekends, or on market holidays, are generally invested on the next business day the market is open.
- Atomic Invest LLC, an SEC-registered investment adviser, manages your portfolio by automatically allocating your money into a diversified mix of funds based on the portfolio you selected during enrollment. With Automated Investing, you don’t choose individual stocks. Instead, Atomic manages the investments within your selected portfolio.
- Once your money is invested, you can manage and track everything from the Investing section of the app:
- Monitor your Investing account balance and investment performance.
- Deposit additional funds to invest.
- Withdraw money back to your Chime Checking or Chime Card account.
- Note: Withdrawing money means selling existing investments, which may have tax implications. If you sell an investment for more than you paid, that’s a capital gain. If you sell it for less, that’s a capital loss. Capital gains may be taxable, and capital losses may be used to offset capital gains and may lower taxes in certain situations. How this applies depends on your personal tax situation. Please consult your tax advisor with questions on your specific situation.
- View your transaction activity and account history.
Atomic manages the day-to-day investment decisions according to your selected portfolio, while Chime provides the app experiences so you can easily access and manage your Investing account in one place.
How is investing different from saving?
- Saving through Chime usually means putting money into a bank account, such as a savings account, where it may earn interest and is FDIC insured (up to applicable limits) through Chime’s bank partners, The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A., Members FDIC. It can be a good option for short-term goals or emergencies.
- Investing, on the other hand, involves putting money into financial products such as funds that hold stocks or bonds. Investments are not FDIC insured and don’t offer guaranteed returns. The value of investments can go up or down over time based on market conditions, which means you could earn money or lose money.
