Receive your tax refund with Chime

Set up direct deposit for your tax refund

When you file your taxes, enter your routing number and Chime Checking Account Number in the direct deposit section. Your refund goes straight to your account — no check to wait for.

Name match: A tax refund may only be direct deposited into an account that is in your name. This means that if you file a joint return, the name of the primary filer must match the name on the account. If a tax refund is directed to an account that is not in your name, it may be rejected and returned to the IRS. No more than three electronic refunds can be deposited into a single financial account. If you exceed this limit you will receive notice from the IRS and a paper check refund.

Find your account details: Your routing number and account number are in the Chime app under Move > Set up direct deposit > Account numbers, or on Chime.com under Profile > Account > Direct deposit setup.

Direct deposit limits for tax refunds

There is no limit on the amount you can receive by direct deposit for federal tax refunds. However, deposits over $10,000 may require additional verification before funds are made available. If this happens, Chime will send you an email and a push notification (if notifications are enabled) with instructions.

Treasury checks: If you receive your refund as a paper US Treasury check, you can deposit it using Chime's Mobile Check Deposit feature. Treasury checks are subject to your available Mobile Check Deposit limits, which vary by member. To use Mobile Check Deposit for your treasury check you must have received a Direct Deposit in the past

Mobile Check Deposit: Chime does not guarantee that all tax refund checks will be accepted.

State tax refunds

State refunds work the same way as federal refunds — enter your Chime account details when filing with your state. Processing times vary by state, and some states take longer than others to issue refunds.

If you lived in one of the following states for the full tax year, you generally won't receive a state income tax refund because these states don't collect state income tax on wages:

State

Note

Alaska

No state income tax on wages

Florida

No state income tax on wages

Nevada

No state income tax on wages

New Hampshire

No state income tax on wages

South Dakota

No state income tax on wages

Tennessee

No state income tax on wages, interest, or dividends

Texas

No state income tax on wages

Washington

No state income tax on wages

Wyoming

No state income tax on wages

Note: New Hampshire and Tennessee tax interest and dividends but not wages. Members in those states may still receive a refund or owe taxes depending on their other forms of income.

Frozen card or lost card impact

Freezing your card or losing it has no effect on incoming direct deposits. Your tax refund is deposited using your routing number and account number — not your physical debit card. The Freeze card toggle only affects card transactions.
