What is a chargeback?

When you dispute a charge, Chime may file a chargeback with the merchant asking them to return the disputed transaction amount back to you. During this process, we also collect additional documentation from the merchant to help resolve the dispute.

The merchant can either return the money to your account or reject the chargeback, and provide Chime with evidence against the claim.

How long does the chargeback process take?

The chargeback timeline depends on the network, transaction type, and account type (credit or debit) involved in the dispute.  This process can take up to 90 calendar days from the filing date. While chargebacks are often resolved sooner, we must wait for the merchant (and sometimes the card network) to respond before resolving the dispute.

In the meantime, you can check the status of your dispute in the Chime app. Once the chargeback is complete, we’ll email you the final resolution.
