How does SpotMe compare to overdraft protection and cash advance programs?

Most banks that offer overdraft protection require you to link a savings account or charge fees for overdrafts on your account. At Chime, we’re not like most banks. We believe in having our members' backs and will allow you to overdraft up to $200* without charging a fee. We also do not require you to link your Savings Account to your Spending Account or charge you a fee to participate in SpotMe.

To get initial access to SpotMe at the minimum $20 limit, you need to receive a single direct deposit of $200. To keep using SpotMe after that, you need to receive total direct deposits of at least $200 every month. These deposits can come from: 

  • An employer or payroll provider
  • A gig economy payer
  • A government benefits payer (including Child Tax Credit payments)

Each deposit must arrive in your Spending Account as an automated clearing house (ACH) transfer or Original Credit Transaction (OCT).

The best way to increase your SpotMe limit is by receiving regular direct deposits into your Chime Spending Account and by using your Chime debit card regularly, however, these things don't guarantee a higher limit. Chime ultimately decides your limit at its discretion based on the following factors:

  • How long you’ve been a Chime member
  • How often you receive direct deposits
  • The amounts of your regular direct deposits
  • How often you use your Chime debit card
  • Other risk-related factors

SpotMe only covers debit card purchases and cash withdrawals. It does not cover Pay Friends transfers, ACH transfers (including direct debits), or Chime Checkbook transactions.

*Chime SpotMe is an optional, no-fee service. All qualifying members will be allowed to overdraw their account up to $20 on debit card purchases initially, but may be later eligible for a higher limit of up to $200 or more based on member’s Chime Account history, direct deposit frequency and amount, spending activity and other risk-based factors. Your limit will be displayed to you within the Chime mobile app. You will receive notice of any changes to your limit. Your limit may change at any time, at Chime’s discretion. SpotMe won’t cover non-debit card purchases, including ACH transfers, Pay Friends transfers, or Chime Checkbook transactions. See terms and conditions
