What are authorization (auth) holds?

Authorization (auth) holds are temporary charges for amounts greater than what you paid for a product or service. For example, gas stations, hotels, and car rental companies may charge them to make sure you have enough money in your account to cover the actual amount of the transaction.

In your Chime app, tap View Transactions to view any authorization holds on your account. See how long a hold will last by tapping it.

Once merchants settle the final amount, the authorization hold is released. This usually takes up to a week (up to 30 days for car rentals). Your balance updates as soon as the merchant settles the transaction and releases the hold.

If the hold doesn’t release within the expected timeframe, you can contact us by tapping the question mark icon on the app’s home screen. From there, tap Chat and ask ChimeBot for help. You can also call us at (844) 244-6363.
